Welcome to the November 2025 Flex Insider.
Aurora Update
Aurora is nearly ready to take flight—and excitement continues to build here at FlexRadio as we close in on delivering what we believe will be a defining moment in the evolution of software defined radio.
Supply Chain Update
Every complex product eventually hits one small hurdle that holds up the finish line.
For Aurora, that’s the power entry module—a specialized part that recently disappeared from the supply chain. The good news is that we’ve secured equivalent components from two different vendors, and both are expected to arrive soon. The moment those parts land, we’ll move directly into volume production and shipping.
Software: Almost There
On the software front, we’ve whittled our open issue list down to just ten items—and most of them are minor refinements. SmartSDR for Aurora is running beautifully, delivering the responsiveness and polish we expect from a flagship product. Once these last few fixes are complete, the software will be ready for general release.
Factory: Ready to Launch
Meanwhile, our factory team is staying busy. We’re building as much of each radio as possible now—every board, every subassembly, every test—so that once the final part arrives, we can complete integration and move directly to shipment. This proactive approach means we can turn parts into finished radios almost immediately.
Safety Certification
We’ve completed safety testing for all non-M models and are finishing the final verification for the M-Model this week. Once complete, we’ll receive our official certification. That’s a huge milestone, as Aurora’s 500 W output and integrated 120/240 V power architecture make it one of the most capable amateur radios ever built.
SmartSDR+ and New Feature Access
We’ve also received great questions about SmartSDR v4.0 and the SmartSDR+ feature set. Here’s what you need to know:
All new SmartSDR+ features are available to Aurora owners who purchase a SmartSDR+ feature license. Some features are model-specific. For example, Enhanced Signal Clarity (ESC) requires dual SCUs and will be available only on AU-520(M) models.
- In short, Aurora owners will have full access to the latest signal processing and performance features FlexRadio has developed with a SmartSDR+ license.
Aurora Highlights & Key Facts
Here are some more questions from the community that you have asked:
- SmartSignal™ adaptive predistortion is standard on every Aurora, delivering cleaner transmitted spectra, higher efficiency, and lower IMD from day one. Measured IMD is in the -43dBc range.
- SmartSDR+ features are fully supported for Aurora owners, with hardware-specific enhancements—such as Enhanced Signal Clarity—available on AU-520(M) models equipped with dual SCUs.
- Only one SmartSDR+ license is needed. SmartSDR+ or SmartSDR+ Early Access unlock the same permanent features; Early Access simply enables them immediately at release and a SmartSDR+ feature license activates 30 days later.
- Portable operation is supported. Aurora runs cleanly from high-quality 120/240 V AC power sources, including inverter or power-station setups that meet capacity and noise specifications.
- Every Aurora model includes an integrated ATU that handles up to 3:1 SWR, and external tuners such as the TGXL may be used safely when rated for full transmitter power.
The Road Ahead
With software nearly complete, certification in sight, and the factory primed for build-out, we’re targeting volume shipments to U.S. customers in December, with international orders to follow shortly thereafter.
In accordance with the EU Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU) Articles 3(3)(d)–(f), which recently introduced new cybersecurity compliance requirements, Aurora is undergoing an additional round of testing. We expect this process to take approximately six weeks, including implementation of minor mitigations. Once completed, we’ll be fully authorized to ship to European customers.
Aurora embodies everything we’ve learned in two decades of SDR innovation—power, precision, and a new level of signal purity through SmartSignal™. It’s built for those who want more: higher dynamic range, deeper integration, and the cleanest possible signal on the band.
We can’t wait to get these radios into your hands and hear that first “on-air” report from an Aurora owner.

SmartSDR v4 Basic remains free for all FlexRadio owners, bringing important performance improvements, updated NR and ANF algorithms, and core DSP enhancements for clearer, cleaner audio. Upgrade from v1, v2 or v3 for free!
SmartSDR+ and SmartSDR+ Early Access are now just $149 and $249 (normally $199 and $299). You only need to purchase one or the other, not both.
Upgrade to SmartSDR+ or SmartSDR Early Access to unlock next-level capabilities, including Noise Floor Scaling, Enhanced Signal Clarity (ESC), CW AutoTune, Digital Voice Keyer (DVK), and a full suite of new DSP noise reduction algorithms.
Both licenses include the same features the only difference is timing:
- SmartSDR+ users receive new features ~30 days after each release.
- SmartSDR+ Early Access users receive them immediately upon release.
Each license is permanently tied to your radio, adding long-term value to your station. Make sure you check out the Release Notes for more details.
SmartSDR Noise Mitigation & What’s New
We’ve expanded and refined SmartSDR’s noise-busting toolkit and this is part of SmartSDR v4 with a SmartSDR+ Feature License.
- NRL – Adaptive LMS filter that cuts random band noise while preserving voice/CW.
- ANFL – Adaptive notch (LMS) that removes steady hums/heterodynes and carriers.
- ANFT – FFT notch that targets up to five narrow tones (≥ –110 dB) from PSU leakage, transformers, or grounding issues.
- NRF – Spectral subtraction for stationary noise (hiss/fan/hum). (8000 Series & Aurora)
- NRS – Spectral subtraction with VAD for cleaner gaps between words. (8000 Series & Aurora)
- RNN – Deep-learning speech enhancer for mixed/fast-changing noise. (8000 Series & Aurora)
If you have not purchased SmartSDR+ yet make sure you do before the December 2nd, 2025. You will want to review the release notes.

Education
We have four unique and engaging talks that we are excited to deliver to your club members.
Each presentation is delivered by Mike VA3MW.
Aurora 500 watt Transceiver. Mike (VA3MW) from FlexRadio will be giving a detailed presentation on the new Aurora HF Series, an exciting advancement in SDR technology. This new platform integrates a high-efficiency 500 W transmitter, amplifier, tuner, and power supply into a single compact unit—bringing high performance and modern design together like never before. Mike will cover how Aurora offers reduced heat, lower power input, and full network control, all while keeping the familiar operating experience FlexRadio users appreciate. It’s a big step forward in the evolution of HF/6m transceivers.
FlexRadio – Not Your Dad’s HF Radio. Our most popular presentation, this talk explores the differences between traditional HF radio using Super Heterodyne Receivers and today’s Software Defined Radios. We’ll showcase and explain the advantages of these advanced technologies. If you have received this one already, then possibly consider one of the other 2.
FlexRadio – The FLEX-8000 Series Overview. This talk is ideal for those with some FlexRadio experience who want to learn more about the recently announced FLEX-8000 series’ hardware and software features. The FLEX-8000 series is the successor to the FLEX-6000 series.
Getting Started in Remote HF Radio. Remote HF Radio Operation has become mainstream. This presentation is perfect for those planning to set up a remote station or just interested in how easy it is today. We’ll cover radio choices, power control, and more!
If any of the clubs you are associated with would like to schedule a presentation, please reply to this email with your preferred dates and times and the talk you are interested in.
We’ll get it on the calendar for the coming season.
